A diverse and growing church all about the justice, hospitality, and love of Jesus.
Our Principles & Beliefs
Traditional Worship; Progressive Values
We strive to be a community as diverse and hospitable as God’s kingdom. We don’t all look or act alike; God knows we don’t all think alike. We don’t all read the Bible the same way. We bring different questions, and we carry different burdens. But each week, we gather together as one to strengthen our faith and resolve in the Way of Jesus.
A Church Community
We know it can be difficult to find a place to call “home” in New York City. As individuals on our own faith journeys, we each grow together in God’s spirit.
Our goal is to encourage your spiritual growth, nurture and develop your gifts, and equip you to be a presence of Jesus' compassion and hospitality for New York City. Our focus on spiritual practices and formation provides both children and adults opportunities to explore questions of faith, our traditions, and how the Bible is relevant to our justice-longing lives.
We strive to create spaces of worship where, no matter your social or economic circumstance, gender, race, or sexual orientation, you will feel safe, welcome, and celebrated. We proudly support More Light Presbyterians and Parity, formerly known as Presbyterian Welcome, two incredible organizations working for the full participation of LGBTQ+ people of faith in the life, ministry, and witness of the Church. Avenue Church NYC unequivocally supports the ordination of women and LGBTQ+ individuals to all facets of church leadership.
A Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation is guided by elected members who are then ordained as Ruling Elders. Together with the Pastor as Moderator, they comprise the church board, called the Session. The Session oversees everything in the congregation’s life — from receiving new members, to scheduling the celebration of Communion, to preparing the church budget. The Session is also the visionary board of the church — praying, thinking, and working together to discern the ways God is calling us to be as a community of faith. Our Session is representative of our congregation: diverse, prayerful, justice-rooted, and hopeful, with a variety of gifts.
